Police search for 'pump and jump' driver
Police in Bergen County are looking for a truck driver they say filled up his tank and left a gas station without paying.
The tactic used Tuesday morning is being called a ?pump and jump? by police. They say it is being seen more frequently since gas prices began to skyrocket.
Surveillance tape from the Route 17 Fuel Stop shows a white box truck pull up to a pump, police say. The driver then asks for his tank to be filled up. Police say the cost was $187 for 40 gallons of diesel fuel.
Police say before the driver pays, he asks the attendant for a receipt.
?He walks back to the booth to write up the receipt, and that's when the truck ? drives out,? says Detective Sgt. Anthony Bellina, of the Carlstadt Police Department.
Bellina says the attendant thought he got a look at the license plate number, but it came up invalid when police ran it.
Route 17 Fuel Stop?s manager, Bittu Singh, says this was the first time someone has pulled the tactic at his gas station.
Singh says he tries to keep prices down to save customers money and can't understand why someone would take advantage of him.
