A police officer in Sicklerville saved a woman and her pets Saturday night during an apartment fire, officials say.
Police say that around 9 p.m., officer Jarel Ferren was patrolling near an apartment complex at Church Road and Sickler Avenue when he saw flames coming out of a back door.
He called for help and ran into the burning apartment through the front door, where he heard someone crying for help. He pushed through the smoke and found an elderly woman laying on the floor.
Police say she's in the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.
Her dog and parrot were also rescued and are OK.
The fire was contained to one apartment, so all the other residents are back in the building.
