Police say three MS-13 gang members were arrested for beating up and stabbing a fellow 16-year-old student from Huntington High School.
The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday during an altercation outside the Burger King on New York Avenue in Huntington Station.
Prosecutors said in Central Islip court Thursday that the victim was leaving the restaurant when the defendants went to their nearby car, grabbed bats and knives and pursued the victim, stabbing him in the back. There was no word on what caused the fight.
The suspects, Nobeli Montes Zuniga, 20, Ramon Arevalo Lopez, 19, and Oscar Canales Molina, 17, all of Huntington Station, were charged with second-degree assault.
"Everyone arrested are confirmed members of MS-13 and the incident is a reminder of this gang's violent ways," says Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart.
The victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with injuries that did not appear life-threatening.
Prosecutors say the victim and his attackers are all Huntington High School students. There was an increased police presence at the school Thursday.
The defendants were each held on $35,000 bail.
Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini says all three defendants entered the country illegally and were already in the Suffolk Police Department's database as confirmed gang members. Two of the suspects, Lopez and Molina, were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement within the past year and a half. Both were released by federal immigration judges.
