Police are searching for whoever set a backpack on fire on the steps of the Park Slope Jewish Center on a holy day.
Despite the fact that this happened in the midst of Yom Kippur and on the steps of a Jewish center, police tell News 12 the incident is not being investigated as a possible hate crime.
Police say a man set the contents of a backpack on fire around 1 a.m. Wednesday before taking off.
The fire department responded and quickly put the fire out before it could spread. Investigators tell News 12 they’re looking into the possibility that the backpack may have been stolen and that the suspect was trying to destroy whatever was inside the backpack. However, it’s unclear exactly what was inside.
No one was hurt, and the Jewish center was not damaged, according to officials.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
