A road rage incident in Fair Lawn has left a 70-year-old man hospitalized and neighbors shaken up.
Doorbell camera video shows a driver striking a pedestrian, dragging him along Berdan Avenue and then leaving the scene. Police said this happened after a previous crash on Plaza Road when the victim attempted to photograph the other driver.
Neighbors said they only heard the screeching of tires and the screams from the man left lying in the roadway.
“I saw the guy bleeding,” said neighbor Ralph Polo. “I called my wife and said ‘Please give me wet towels.’ I’m patting them on the guy's head. I’m talking to him, he was conscious.”
Police said the victim was hospitalized with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. Residents say an act of violence like this is out of character for the neighborhood.
“People run, they go to the park, they walk, they walk their dogs, too,” Polo said. “It’s a lot of traffic during the daytime. Some of these guys take off in the car, sometimes they speed up and down.”
Although the other driver sped away, the victim’s son was able to snap a picture that proved vital.
“Luckily, the son reacted fast with the phone,” Polo said. “He took it from far away, but [police] could trace the license plate, and that’s how the guy got caught.”
Norberto Herrera, 66, of Fair Lawn is facing several charges, including assault by automobile, leaving the scene and failure to report an accident.
