Police: CT teens face charges after filming sex acts in classroom
Police say two Connecticut high school students are facing charges after allegedly engaging in a sex act in a classroom that was recorded by another student.
New Britain police say the 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy will be summoned to juvenile court to answer to charges of public indecency and risk of injury or impairing the morals of a minor.
Police say the encounter was consensual and both students have been released to their parents. Their names were not released because of their age.
New Britain High School Principal Damon Pearce issued a statement via voicemail to parents Friday, stating that the safety of students and staff was the school’s “highest priority.”
Police say another student took cellphone video of the encounter, which occurred last Thursday. The video was shared widely and posted on social media sites like Snapchat and Facebook. Authorities say that they are now trying to stop the spread of the video and are threatening consequences for those who filmed and shared it.
“Sharing of child pornography can be a felony, no matter what age. If it’s a child or an adult. Child pornography is an illegal act,” former Connecticut police detective and now president of Internet Safety Concepts Scott Driscoll told Connecticut television station WFSB.
Driscoll says that parents should monitor their children’s social media and internet use. He says that they should confront their children about sharing videos such as these.
“We have to stop circulating these things and sharing them because while some people may think it’s funny, it has short and long-term consequences,” he says.
It was unclear where the teacher was while the sex acts were being filmed. Students say the teacher was in the room but unaware it was happening. The school did not publicly comment.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
