Police confiscate weapons, 500-pound pig from Toms River man
Toms River police say that they have confiscated weapons, ammunition and a 500-pound pig from a town resident.
Police say that 56-year-old Joseph Kelly showed up at the Toms River police station Monday morning and allegedly told officers that he may have a warrant out for his arrest.
Authorities say that when officers went out to Kelly’s vehicle, they found a loaded shotgun “serving no legitimate purpose.” Kelly was charged and taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.
Police say that based on Kelly’s statements during his time at the police station, they felt it necessary to check on his Egret Drive home for the safety of any other person who may be inside.
Police did not say what types of comments Kelly allegedly made.
Officials say that officers found additional weapons and ammunition inside the home.
”Due to the unknown age and condition of some of the located munitions, the New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit responded and assisted in their removal as a precautionary measure,” Toms River police said in a statement.
A 500-pound pig was also found inside the home. Animal Control took custody of the pig “for safe keeping.”
Egret Drive was closed for a time during the investigation.
Police say that at no time were any threats made to the public.
It was unclear what charges Kelly would face.
