North Brunswick police are asking for the public’s help identifying a brazen burglar who has broken into several homes in town while the owners are asleep.
Authorities say that the man typically enters the home through an unlocked first-floor window. He usually wanders around the home, stealing car keys and liquor. None of the victims have woken up while he was inside the home. Police say he has stolen three cars as well.
“It’s extremely rare. Most burglars are non-confrontational and there’s a very small population that are willing to take that chance,” says North Brunswick Police Capt. Brian Hoiberg.
Hoiberg says that similar break-ins have happened in nearby New Brunswick and Franklin. He says that homeowners should lock their windows because the burglar sometimes cuts screens to come in. He is also warning homeowners to not confront the man.
“If they wake and realize he’s in the home, we don’t want any confrontation,” Hoiberg says. “Please lock yourself where you can and call 911.”
Several of the broken-into homes have had security cameras, so police have several images of the suspect.
Homeowners say that they are on edge since the burglar is still on the loose.
“It’s definitely frightening. I feel like it’s super intrusive and especially during the nighttime when everyone is asleep,” says North Brunswick resident Kristen Axelsen.
Anyone who recognizes the burglar should call North Brunswick police at 732-247-0922 Ext. 420.
