Police arrest man in theft of bag forgotten by ATM workers in Mahwah
Police say they are close to arresting a second suspect in the theft of a bag containing nearly $150,000 after two employees filling ATMs left it on a northern New Jersey lawn.
Authorities arrested 42-year-old Alton Harvey on Wednesday afternoon in Irvington. Authorities are also looking for 35-year-old Jamar Bludson, of Newark.
Mahwah police say the ATM employees stopped at a business when one of them placed the satchel on the lawn as he moved items around in their vehicle. They drove off, forgetting the bag.
Shortly after 11:15 a.m. Monday, surveillance video showed a passenger in a white van grabbing the bag. Police say Harvey, who has 10 previous felony convictions, was driving that van. They say Bludson was the one seen apparently taking the bag.
Police say Harvey told them that he split the money with Bludson and used his share to buy a Chevy Tahoe in cash the very same day.
Police say they have recovered $30,000 and the Tahoe.
It's unclear if Harvey has an attorney who could comment on the charges. He's being held at the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $125,000 bail.
Authorities are searching for Bludson in Essex and Bergen counties, where he has family. Anyone with information should call Mahwah detectives at 201-529-1000.
