Police arrest Jeremy Arrington in connection with fatal Newark stabbings
Police have arrested the man accused in an attack that left two children and a woman dead and several more injured.
Jeremy Arrington is accused of stabbing six people inside a Newark home over the weekend. He is facing murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the crime.
Arrington was arrested at a home Sunday evening after allegedly getting into a standoff with police. The home was located about a mile away from the Hedden Terrace home where the stabbings occurred.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka praised the community for providing authorities with enough tips to track down Arrington.
"It shows that a community can come together when we absolutely need to," the mayor said.
Authorities believe the motive behind the stabbing was revenge. An arrest warrant was out for Arrington for an unrelated crime last month. It's believed someone in the home went on social media to get the word out about Arrington and his alleged crime.
Officials say Arrington stabbed the victims over the course of an hour and then fled the home.
"The hearts of everyone involved in with this case and everyone in the larger community go out to the families of these victims," says acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.
The victims have been identified as 8-year-old Aerial Little Whitehurst, 11-year-old Al-Jahon Whitehurst and 23-year-old Syasia McBurroughs. A 13-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a 29-year-old woman were also stabbed. They are in the hospital in critical but stable condition.
Arrington's bail was set at $5 million.
