A 70-year-old man from Delaware competing in a triathlon event died Sunday in Lower Township in Cape May County. 

The man was part of the Escape the Cape Triathlon. 

According to police, the man had nearly completed the swim portion of the race when he was seen in distress by lifeguards near the finish line.

Police say the man was pulled from the water and given CPR, but couldn't be revived.

Police say proper safety procedures were followed for the race. 

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
