Jersey City police say that five people are facing charges for their involvement in a street fight between 100 people on Tuesday.
Officials say that the fight broke out Tuesday evening on Bostwick Avenue. Police tried to stop the fight, but some people in the crowd turned on the officers and tried to grab their weapons.
Police used pepper spray and batons to control the crowd.
Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea says that the COVID-19 pandemic makes a situation like this even more dangerous.
“Let me condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the actions that called the officers to be there – in the middle of a pandemic when we are trying to keep as many people alive in this city as possible…and the assaults upon the officers when they arrived,” said Shea.
No one was seriously hurt in the fight.
Anyone who might have a video of the brawl or information about it should call the police.
