The Pickle King factory in Paterson was destroyed in a fire early Saturday morning.
Paterson fire and police departments responded to the blaze after 6 a.m. on 220 Ellison St.
“There was a partial collapse of the roof structure,” said Deputy Chief Jason Macomes.
Fire crews battled the flames for several hours. By 9 a.m., the main body of the fire was knocked down. However, flammable objects inside made it difficult to keep the situation under control.
“A large amount of storage from boxes, shipping materials. There’s no access to the sides of building,” he said.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury to his hand after a slip and fall. Macomes says that firefighter has since been transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities say there was no one inside the building when they arrived. Employees were last in the building on Friday.
The Pickle King is close to the Panther Academy and Passaic County Community College. Both facilities were not impacted by the fire, according to Mayor Andre Sayegh.
“Thankfully, our firefighters were able to protect the school. That was our main concern,” he said.
Authorities say they are assessing if students can return to the college on Monday.
Sources told News 12 that The Pickle King has had past issues with squatters.
Police say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Jerry Speziale Jr., the director of Public Safety, sent News 12 photos from the scene.
