Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a $5,000 reward to find out who put the remains of a dog inside a suitcase earlier this month.
Asbury Park police say that an Asbury Park resident found the decomposing body of a brown pit bull inside a black nylon suitcase floating in Sunset Lake after a July 4 fireworks show.
Police also found a button that read, "I [love] Howard University," as well as a choke chain inside the bag.
Officials believe that the suitcase had been in the lake for about two weeks. According to a necropsy, the dog was about 1 year old.
PETA issued a statement in the hope that someone can help find who the dog belonged to.
"This community needs to know whether this dog was dead or alive when he was put in this suitcase, because a dog abuser may be at large and strike again," says PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien.
