A program is back in place in Passaic County that offered some low-level offenders community service instead of jail.
The Sheriff's Labor Assistance Program, also known as "SLAP," allows those with non-violent offenses to help clean roadways in the county.
Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik says it helps more than just those who need to work off their sentences.
"It benefits the community. Again, DPW workers can focus their attention elsewhere while we clean the streets for them. And of course, this saves the taxpayers money," Berdnik says, and adds that the program restarted last week after stopping during the pandemic.
The program currently has four people working and they are looking to add more.
