A New Jersey Paralympian was given a hero’s welcome Tuesday after winning a gold medal for the U.S. sled hockey team for the 2018 Paralympics in Pyeongchang.
A large parade was held in Jack Wallace’s home town of Franklin Lakes. Hundreds of members of the community came out to see the 19-year-old athlete.
“We like to do things like this and make a fuss over people who do well,” says Franklin Lakes Mayor Frank Bivona.
Wallace lost a leg in a waterskiing accident when he as 10 years old. He was on the ice when Team USA scored the winning goal.
“We were really proud that Jack was on the ice in overtime,” says Wallace’s father John. “He was one of the only four players on the ice in overtime.”
Wallace says that he is grateful for the parade and the celebration.
“It’s truly amazing to see the support of the community come out,” Wallace says. “I really don’t have enough thanks for everyone that’s come out to support me.”
After the celebration Wallace was given the key to the city and found out that a street has been named for him in town. The mayor also declared Tuesday to be “Jack Wallace Day.”
Wallace studies biomedical engineering at The College of New Jersey. His parents say that he hopes to one day make prosthetics.
