A new ordinance that went into effect Tuesday in Bradley Beach has put a ban on plastic shopping bags.

Bagel International owner Edward Merlino says that he used to go through about 1,000 plastic bags per week for his customers. But now customers will have to use either paper bags or reusable canvas bags.

A sign posted at Country Farms warns customers about the ban and encourages them to bring their own bags. Paper bags will have to be purchased.

"We wait until they ask for a paper bag and if they ask us for a paper bag, we have to charge them 5 cents… We try to give them not too many bags,” says clerk Dixit Patel.

Store owners are still working out the logistics of the ban, but some Bradley Beach residents say that they support the new ordinance.

"Every time you go for a walk on the beach you see plastic bags, you see plastic everywhere,” says Paul Charette.

Some other towns with existing bans or new ones going into effect include Beach Haven, Belmar, Harvey Cedars, Jersey City, Monmouth Beach, Point Pleasant Beach, Stafford and Teaneck. Lambertville's ban goes into effect in 2020.
