A pain scrambler that automatically adjusts to the patient's body position turned a New Jersey man's life around.

Michael Mayes suffered chronic pain after a car crash more than six years ago. The implanted electronic stimulator features technology that is similar to a smart phone, which makes it adjust when Mayes changes his body position.

Mayes says he couldn't ride his bike or jog, things he used to take for granted, following the accident. He says the device has taken away his pain.

After years of failed pain treatment, Michael says even the little things can be a joy now. The device also remembers a pain setting after the patient stays in one position for three minutes or longer. That memory is helpful because the intensity of pain will vary if a patient is sitting in an airplane seat or a car seat for a long time.
