The owner of the pit bull that attacked an Elmont mother and her baby last week agreed to euthanize the dog and another one that lived in her home.
Police say that last week, one of Muriel Perales' pit bulls attacked her tenant and the victim's 2-month-old son, leaving him seriously injured.
The mother suffered a bite on her leg, but her infant's head and face were mauled in the attack. The baby remains in intensive care but he is stable.
"The mom is still traumatized," says Alan Davis, the victims' attorney. "She was heading toward the car, had the baby in a car seat, and was letting the landlady know she was leaving."
Davis says that when Perales, the landlady, opened her door, a dog rushed out and attacked the victims.
Police say a 41-year-old man who had been working nearby intervened, pummeling the dog and pushing the woman and her child into a car for safety.
The Town of Hempstead seized the pit bull involved in the attack and another from Perales' home. Tearfully in court, she agreed to have them both euthanized immediately.
They were a 2-year-old male named Alpha and a 3-year-old female named Omega.
Neighbors say the dogs were intimidating, and Davis says he's investigating whether the dogs were responsible for hurting the victim's 5-year-old daughter in a separate incident in August.
