The cost of owning an electric vehicle in New Jersey just went up thanks to an additional annual EV registration fee that started on July 1.

To register a zero emissions vehicle, owners now have to pay the regular registration fee plus an additional yearly fee of $250. This will increase $10 per year for the next four years, according to the governor's office. The price will be capped at $290.

New EV owners will be required to pay four years up front – an extra $1,000.

The money will go into the Transportation Trust Fund program that will then support various transportation infrastructure projects. This all comes as New Jersey is set to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 and limit those sales starting in 2027.
