It may be one of the most successful high school sports programs in the state that most people in New Jersey haven’t heard of – the Millburn High School girl’s tennis team.
The team has not lost a match in six years. That is 148 wins.
Bill Wickenheisser has been the head coach for eight years. He also runs the boy’s program. But Wickenheisser says that he didn't start playing tennis until his mid-20s.
“I was never a tennis player. I really caught onto that later on in my life,” he says.
What is most impressive is that in the eight straight Tournament of Champions finals since Wickenheisser took over the team has only had one state singles champion.
“Our success is the team, not any one individual,” he says.
The team has won the Tournament of Champions seven out of the last eight years. For 13 straight seasons the team has been group and sectional champions. They have also been conference champions for 11 straight years.
"Every year we keep on pulling it out and it's just incredible because it's a good team effort,” says sophomore Paulina Feoli. “It doesn't matter if one person is amazing, it's a whole team effort."
The boy’s tennis team is also as successful. The team has 25 state titles, tied for the most in New Jersey.
