Officials: Plan to sell New Jersey water supply to New York is a rumor
Water officials say that there are no plans to sell New Jersey's water supply to New York, at least for the near future.
Residents apparently became concerned when word got out that the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission, the agency that oversees the Wanaque Reservoir, was going to be selling water to the water company Suez.
Suez officials say that the company submitted a feasibility study in June and that buying New Jersey water was just one of many concepts. However, they say that there is no plan or proposal at this time.
"There's been no meeting since, no action on it and in fact in our rate case that we filed earlier this year... we plan to pursue conservation and water recovery initiatives before any transfer of water is discussed with state agencies," says Suez Director of External Affairs Bill Madden.
Madden says that if there were any formal discussions to sell water, it wouldn't happen for years.
The Wanaque Reservoir is said to be at its lowest level in 14 years due to widespread drought conditions across New Jersey.
