Officials: Man in 10-hour standoff damaged police robot
A Matawan man who held police in a 10 ½-hour standoff is facing several charges, including pushing a police robot down a flight of stairs.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office says that 51-year-old Michael “Bean” Geran was armed with a gun and refused to come out of his home for over 10 hours Monday.
Matawan police were called to Geran’s Johnson Avenue home just before noon after a family member called police to have them check on him. Geran refused to come out and police determined that he was armed.
Officials say that officers tried talking with Geran for several hours, but that he finally stopped communicating.
Police say that a Monmouth County Emergency Response Team robot was sent into the home at one point, but that Geran cut its wires and pushed it down stairs. The damage cost over $5,000, according to authorities.
Geran finally surrendered just after 10:15 p.m. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
The roads around Geran’s home were closed during the standoff and many residents were unable to return home.
Geran is facing several charges, including creating a false public alarm and criminal mischief.
