Authorities say that electrical wires knocked down by a storm killed a woman in Fanwood.

Witnesses say the 26-year-old Plainfield woman was driving down Midway Avenue when she tried to avoid a fallen tree. The wires then unexpectedly fell on her car, and she was killed when she tried to get out of the vehicle.

There were severe storms in the area around the time of the incident and multiple wires were knocked down.

A family witnessed the incident and rushed to help.

"We just called 911 right after, we couldn't do anything," says Camilla ChaCha. "It was so scary and I never want to go through that ever again."

Authorities say rescuers had difficulty getting to the woman due to the live wires. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fanwood police chief says that no one should leave their vehicle if a live wire is nearby.

"You stay in the car, you're grounded while you're in the car. The rubber of the car will ground you," says Chief Richard Trigo. "However, that's easier said than done when you have flames shooting all around you, but the key is to stay inside the car"

Officials did not immediately release information about the woman's identity.

No one else was injured.
