Officials: 88 pounds of ‘swine meat’ sausages confiscated at Newark Liberty Int’l Airport
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has confiscated 88 pounds of “swine meat” sausages that were brought into the country at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Officials say that on Jan. 8, Border Protection K9 Cody alerted its handler about a suspicious suitcase that arrived from Kosovo. The passenger that claimed the suitcase declared that he had brought in “homemade sausages” made with swine meat.
“The importation of swine meat, though seemingly harmless to the general public, could cause grave damage to our economy and agricultural industry, and CBP does its part in keeping these prohibited items from entering the United States,” CBP New York Field Operations Director Troy Miller said in a statement.
Swine meat is prohibited from Kosovo under United States Department of Agriculture regulations. The passenger was released without a penalty since he declared the meat.
