The Monmouth County prosecutor has confirmed a fire in Neptune Township has left a 17-year-old boy dead.
The home caught fire shortly around 11:58 p.m. on 1821 McBride Ave. Two other people inside the home were able to escape, according to officials.
Officials say the boy was located inside his bedroom. The power at the home was out due to the strong storms. A resident heard a fire alarm and awoke to find the boy’s room consumed with fire.
Officials are investigating the fatality as possibly storm-related.
Around the township, 6th and Ridge avenues are closed, and it will be for many more hours if not days after a tree fell onto a car.
About two blocks away from McBride Avenue, on Cortland Street, was the scene a miraculous escape when a tree came crashing through not one, but two homes.
A woman was inside when the storm hit. The tree came down, she jumped out of a rear window, and made it out OK.

"We have multiple houses significantly damaged from trees falling," says Neptune Township OEM official Michael Bascom. "We have power outages to about three or four of them down to about 50% now, but this morning [the] hospital has been restored thankfully, [as] we have many critical facilities still working on generator."

There are many road closures and many traffic lights around the township without power.
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story had the boy’s age as 16; it is now confirmed he was 17.
