Two New York City police officers accused of armed robbery found themselves on the other side of the law in New Jersey Monday.
Hector Alvarez and Miguel Castillo were arrested and charged Friday after they allegedly attempted to rob a Rutherford man in his home. Bergen County Assistant Prosecutor James Donohue said the two were likely after ?a large amount of drug money at the location.??[The] defendant and the other attempted to gain entry into the residence Friday morning,? Donohue said. ?A neighbor observed a scuffle and called police.?
Authorities said when the neighbor asked the men to stay until local police arrived, they fled. The neighbor said the two identified themselves as police officers and claimed they were working on official business related to terrorism. Rutherford police were able to catch the men a short time later.
?After they were brought back to the police station, they both confessed they were there to commit an armed robbery upon the victim,? Donohue said. ?We believe a large amount of drug money was at that location.?
Alvarez and Castillo, both veteran corrections officers, pleaded not guilty in court Monday on charges of attempted kidnapping, armed robbery, armed burglary and other offenses. A judge kept the officers? bail at $1 million.
Both men resigned from their positions hours after being suspended by the NYPD.
