NYPD arrests 2nd man after explosion that killed fire chief
The New York Police Department says it has arrested a second man in connection with a house explosion that killed a fire battalion chief.
Chief Michael Fahy was killed by falling debris Tuesday while directing operations from the street. He had been supervising an evacuation following a report of a gas leak at the two-story house. He was a 17-year fire department veteran and father of three.
Authorities are looking into whether the building that exploded was being used to grow marijuana.
Police say they have two men in custody. The first, Julio Salcedo-Contrer, was arrested in his hometown of Cliffside Park, New Jersey. He is awaiting extradition back to New York. Officials say he rented the apartment and is suspected of using it is a marijuana grow house.
A Manhattan man, 32-year-old Garivaldi Castillo, was taken into custody in New York City. He is facing charges of criminal possession of marijuana and police say additional charges may be pending, based on what other evidence they find.
The Bronx District Attorney's Office says Castillo will likely be arraigned Thursday.
It was not immediately clear what charges Salcedo-Contrer would face.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
