Federal regulators have declared texting,emailing or using any cell phone simply too dangerous to be allowed for drivers nationwide.

While the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) does not have the power to impose such restrictions, it's urging states to do so. The recommendation applies even to hands-free devices.

New Jersey safety experts agree with federal regulators and their push for a nationwide, total ban on cell phone use while driving. William Margaretta, of the New Jersey State Safety Council, says the technological advancements found in smartphones make a total ban all the more necessary.

The NTSB's unanimous recommendation would make an exception for devices that are seen as a help to driver safety, such as GPS navigation systems, and in emergency situations.

Texting or using a cell phone without a hands-free device is already illegal in New Jersey.
