A Passaic County woman will be one of the people attending Pope Francis' Mass at Madison Square Garden when the pontiff visits New York next week.
A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Newark says that it is only getting 100 tickets for the Mass and has yet to figure out who is going. However, West Milford resident Sandy Leonard attends a church in Warwick, N.Y.
"I was so excited," Leonard says about finding out she received the tickets. "I called my dad and he thought something was wrong. I said 'No, I won the tickets!'"
Leonard says that she got the ticket through the lottery system put into place. Then she found out her mother won a ticket as well. Her mom gave up her ticket so that Leonard's former youth minister, Kevin Flynn, can attend the services.
"I'm completely lucky," says Flynn. "Without Sandy, it's impossible, so I owe her a lot and I appreciate it and I'm just happy."
Pope Francis will visit New York City on Sept. 24 and 25. He will then hold a Mass in Philadelphia.
