New Jersey Transit will receive $10 million in federal funding to help increase safety measures.
Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez announced Wednesday that the money was secured to help the agency install Positive Train Control (PTC) across the NJ Transit rail network.
The senators cited the recent NJ Transit train derailment at the Hoboken Terminal last September that killed a woman and injured over 100 other people. The train came into the station too fast and plowed into the bumper and the platform. PTC may have prevented that derailment.
Transit riders who travel through Hoboken say they agree that PTC technology is badly needed.
“Anything that improves safety and worker safety is worth the investments,” says Hoboken resident Carter Kraft. “It almost seems like the condition of the system is this black box that only the people in charge understand, and all of us commuters are putting our lives in their hands hoping that they're making the right decision.”
A spokesperson for NJ Transit says in a statement, “While we have not officially received notice of this grant award, we are very pleased and thank Sens. Menendez and Booker and the entire federal delegation for their support.”
NJ Transit says that PTC is fully funded in the agency’s budget, but extra resources can only help them meet the Dec. 31, 2018 deadline.
