Transit commuters’ “Summer of Hell” is finally over, as phase one of Amtrak’s Penn Station repairs come to an end.
New Jersey Transit resumed its normal commuting schedule in time for the Tuesday morning commute.
The Amtrak track repairs meant that the Midtown Direct transit lines ended in Hoboken, and commuters looking to get into Manhattan had to transfer via PATH or ferry to get into New York. The modified schedule ended Tuesday, and the trains will continued on to Manhattan.
The North Jersey Coastline trains also resumed operating into Hoboken Terminal now that the repair work is done.
With the return of regular service schedules, NJ Transit will no longer cross-honor tickets on buses, PATH and ferry service.
Customers told News 12 New Jersey that they hope commuting delays come to an end.
“I’m actually really happy that it returns to normal because it takes like 40 minutes for one light rail to come or one train to come,” said commuter Jared Carrion.
NJ Transit riders are urged to check the new timetables for trains.
Amtrak’s two-month-long repair project was pushed forward after a series of derailments and other incidents affected rail service. The company said more work still has to be done at NY Penn Station, but the remaining repairs will take place at off-times so commuters aren’t interrupted.
