NJ Transit releases plans in event of Amtrak strike
New Jersey Transit announced some of its contingency plans Thursday in the event of an Amtrak strike at the end of the month.
If Amtrak workers go on strike, there will be severe disruptions to train service for commuters, particularly those who use the Northeast Corridor. NJ Transit trains on the North Jersey Coast Line would not be able to get onto the Amtrak-owned Northeast Corridor rails in Rahway.
NJ Transit plans to have limited shuttle bus service at the Rahway station, as well as six other affected stations, to connect commuters to the PATH in Newark, Hoboken and Harrison. NJ Transit officials say most service will operate during peak hours in the peak direction with only limited reverse shuttle service.
?In the event of a strike, customers can expect crowding and delays and should consider all options, including carpooling and telecommuting,? NJ Transit Executive Director Richard Sarles says.
NJ Transit also plans to re-route midtown direct trains that transfer in Secaucus to Hoboken to connect commuters with ferries or the PATH.
The Northeast Corridor carries more than half of NJ Transit?s 740 daily trains.
