Starting March 1, police in the Garden State can pull drivers over for suspicion of using a cell phone.

The previous cell phone ban in New Jersey could only fine a driver for cell phone use if they were pulled over for another infraction. Getting busted under the new law carries an automatic $100 fine, but no points will be added to the violator?s license.

There are some loopholes for those who want to continue multi-tasking while behind the wheel. Drivers can legally continue to use any hands-free devices, like an earpiece or blue tooth, to make cell calls while driving.

The law also allows drivers to make cell phone calls to report emergencies. Calls can also be made when drivers feel their lives may be in danger.
