NJ police warned of threat to 'take-out' officers
As the violence and rioting in Baltimore continues, New Jersey law enforcement officers are on high alert after a "credible" threat has been unveiled.
According to the New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association, "members of various gangs...have entered into a partnership to work together to 'take-out' law enforcement officers."
Union leaders are urging officers to remain vigilant of their surroundings.
"In a job like this, we always tell everybody no job is routine. Always be aware of your surroundings," says Newark Fraternal Order of Police President James Stewart. "It's really nothing new. We're just reinforcing that. Be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for people coming up behind you."
Stewart also warns officers to be careful even when off-duty.
"Some guys like to wear police shirts or shirts with their union affiliation on it, but that might single you out as a law enforcement officer to somebody looking to cause some havoc in your life," he says.
The rioting in Baltimore stems from the death of Freddie Gray, who mysteriously died while in Baltimore police custody. Gray's funeral was held Monday.
