As family and friends remember the Ramapough Lenape Indian Tribe member who was fatally shot a year ago, a Bergen County grand jury indicted a state park police officer in his death.
The shooting of 45-year-old Emil Mann at Ringwood State Park on April 1, 2006, sparked protests and created tension between the tribe and Bergen County officials. At the time, tribe members claim Mann was trying to break up a fight between a cousin and a park police officer when he was shot.
Chad Walder has been charged with reckless manslaughter in Mann?s death. If convicted, Walder faces five to 10 years in prison. Ramapough Lenape Tribal Chief Dwaine Perry says he is happy there has been a decision, but says he wishes the charge had been for murder.
Meanwhile, the tribe will have a memorial walk and ceremony on Stagg Hill Sunday to honor Mann.
