NJ Googled Clinton, Harambe and Trump hats during Election Night
From Russia to Chelsea Clinton's possible future as a politician, to Harambe the gorilla, New Jersey residents had many things on their minds as election night rolled into Wednesday morning.
Kane In Your Corner reviewed the trending Google searches from 8 p.m. Tuesday to noon on Wednesday, and found they tell an interesting narrative.
When the polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday, people in the Garden State were clearly looking for information. The top Google search term between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. was "election map." But by 11 p.m., the video of Donald Trump's election watch party in Manhattan apparently began to have an impact on viewers, as evidenced by a spike in searches for the phrase, "Make America Great Again Hat".
By midnight, New Jersey residents were starting to show interest in an independent presidential candidate, but it wasn't Jill Stein or Gary Johnson; it was Harambe the gorilla. The spike in searches came after reports Harambe had managed to get thousands of write-in votes.
At 1 a.m., New Jersey residents showed a marked increase in searches for Trump's campaign manager, Kelly Anne Conway, herself a New Jersey resident. By 2 a.m., there was a new person of interest -- singer Katy Perry. Perry took the stage at Hillary Clinton's watch party to offer supporters there a message of unity, saying, "This is the moment we need to remember that we all love our parents, and we all love our children."
At 2:50 a.m., Donald Trump emerged on stage to give his acceptance speech. Google searches seemed to reflect concern about his upcoming presidency, with noticeable spikes for two topics, "Russia" and "stock market crash."
By 6 a.m. Wednesday, New Jersey residents who'd had to call it an early night were waking up, and many were Googling "Who is our next president?" By 7 a.m., the state was diverging from the rest of the country. While most of the U.S. showed a spike in searches for information about "inauguration," residents in New Jersey were interested in viewing "Donald Trump memes."
At 10:30 a.m., Clinton gave her concession speech. That apparently spurred New Jersey residents to look to the future, and if their Google searches are any indication, they may not be tired of the Clinton family just yet. The top New Jersey search as of 11 a.m. Wednesday was "Chelsea Clinton," and the top link, an article titled, "Will Chelsea Clinton Ever Run for Office?"
New Jersey residents were also looking up the meaning of words on the Merriam Webster website. Two of the most popular searches were "Bellwether," a term political analysts like to use that means an indicator or predictor, and "acrimonious," a word meaning angry and bitter.
