The NJ Department of Transportation says it is spending less on snow removal than in previous years.

State road crews say they have responded to 22 winter weather events since November 2019.

The NJ DOT says this year it spent just under $40 million on winter operations. Last year the DOT spent $95 million and in 2018 the it spent $103 million on winter operations.

The DOT says it starts each winter with a $10 million budget for snow removal materials.  After that DOT officials say they will spend what is needed to keep the roads clear and are reimbursed by the Department of Treasury.
