NJ commuters not happy about proposed toll hike
The cost to go to and from New York City may soon be going up, and New Jersey commuters are not happy.
The Port Authority announced Thursday a proposal to raise prices at bridges and tunnels from $6 to $8. According to the Port Authority, the increase would help cover the cost of construction and extra security.
Many drivers say they are upset the price of everything keeps going up. They say the ever-changing gas prices and the possibility of a toll hike are really burning a hole in their pockets.
?I think it?s totally wrong, they should keep the tolls where they are,? Hackensack commuter Jeff Brinster said. ?They didn?t do any improvements. There?s not improvements going on, so why raise the tolls??
Others say they wouldn?t mind the increases if something could be done about the traffic.
?Look at the traffic, 45-minute wait, hour wait,? Fairfield commuter Ernie Heitz said. ?They should add another bridge or tunnel or ? something to cut down [the traffic] ? then you don?t mind paying.?
The proposed toll hike wouldn?t take effect immediately. The Port Authority must hold a series of public hearings. Then, both the governors of New York and New Jersey must give their approvals.
