Activists in Monmouth County chained themselves around the neck in 90 degree weather to bring attention to a practice they say is an outrage.
The group says that thousands of dogs die each year after being put in chains.
?We had four dogs that we just found dead that were chained to doghouses,? says Chief Buddy Amato of Humane Law Enforcement. Amata was one of the demonstrators who took part in the ?Chain Off? event.
Officials say animal shelters across New Jersey are rescuing a growing number of dogs from this type of abuse. Four states have laws against the practice but New Jersey doesn't.
Officials with the Monmouth County SPCA say the practice is not only abuse to the animal but a public health issue as well, because a dog can become more aggressive after being chained up.
Different "Chain Off" events took place across the country Saturday and were sponsored by the Humane Society.
