PARAMUS - A World War II veteran has received a Purple Heart Medal nearly 70 years after he was wounded in battle.

John La Puzz, 97, received his Purple Heart from Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. at the Veterans Home in Paramus today.

La Puzz was wounded in Italy on July 29, 1944.

Pascrell says the award given today is nearly seven decades overdue. "Due to, main reason, a clerical error," he says. "It was corrected by the U.S. Army Board of Appeal."

La Puzz was born in Paterson and served with the 363rd Infantry Regiment in the European Theater during World War II.

The Purple Heart was established when George Washington was commander in chief.
