TOMS RIVER - World War II veteran and Silver Star recipient Leonard G. 'Bud' Lomell, of Toms River, has died at the age of 91.

Lomell climbed a giant cliff at Pointe du Hoc, France and destroyed German guns during the first hours of the D-Day invasion. Lomell received several medals and later an entire chapter was dedicated to him in Tom Brokaw's book "The Greatest Generation."

In 2008, officials dedicated a room in Toms River's town hall to Lomell.
