KEARNY - Emergency responders in Kearny staged a mock evacuation of a building designed to mimic a hazardous materials situation at a postal distribution center.
All 250 workers inside the building were evacuated in the drill meant to prepare for exposure to anthrax or another biological agent.
Emergency response teams then went inside to rescue an injured person. HAZMAT teams then staged a decontamination area outside.
"Emergency preparedness is critical in today's environment," says George Flood, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service. "It's important to practice and identify areas where we may need to improve."
The Postal Service performs active drills like this every few years.
Today's scenario was part of National Preparedness Month, designed to help everyone be ready for an emergency.
