ASBURY PARK - Hundreds of thousands of Americans are expected to take part in a Women’s march on Washington Saturday, one day after President Donald Trump was sworn into office.

Dozens of “sister” marches are taking place across the country in solidarity of the big protest march, including one in Asbury Park.

Organizers of the Asbury Park march say they planned the local march in just under a week – and it all started with a text message.

Dallas Hlatky, Amanda Kane and two other women thought the march would just be a small gathering. They say that they were surprised to find out how large it grew.

We were so excited when we reached 100 and 200 [people],” Hlatky says. “When we reached 500 we kind of took a breath and went ‘Oh my God.’”

The women soon realized that they needed to raise some money as the event grew in order to put on a safe event. They started a GoFundMe page and raised more than $9,000 in only two days.

“I’ve never experience for myself the difference that one person or four people could make with a great idea and with the audacity to put it out there,” says Hlatky. “It’s been incredible.”

More than 4,000 people have signed up for the march, which begins at 10 a.m. at Lake and Emory avenues.

The largest Women’s March in the state will take place in Trenton at Patriot's Theater at the War Memorial at the same time.
