NEWARK - Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating a fatal shooting.

Witnesses say the victim crashed his car into the steps of a residential building on Hawthorne Avenue after he was shot. He was taken to the hospital, but died from his injuries.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. near a church.

“One of our parishioners heard a bunch of gunshots,” says Antoine Obery with United Deliverance Tabernacle Church. “One of our deacons stepped outside, and saw the police and everything.”

Information about the victim was not immediately released.
