NEWARK - Parents showed up at a high school graduation in Newark only to be turned away at the doors.

The West Side High School graduation was held Friday inside the Central High School auditorium. Many parents chose to pay $250 for a package that included four tickets, a cap and gown, yearbook and invitations to a family picnic, but the seats were not considered reserved.

When some families arrived, they were told the auditorium was full, even though they had tickets. Those parents told New 12 New Jersey the problem was that some guests who got there earlier were allowed in without tickets. It meant that some graduates walked and got their diplomas while their families stood outside.

"I'm kind of sad because my mother, she really didn't see me graduate," says West Side High School graduate Lateef Spenser. "She was crying when I came out of the building."

The school administration has not commented on the situation.
