WEST MILFORD - A West Milford police officer made a daring rescue overnight as flames and smoke quickly filled a home.

Authorities say 34-year-old Suzanne Anderson called 911 at around 2:30 a.m. to report that her house on Upper Greenwood Road was on fire.

Officer Anthony Frassa arrived on scene to find Anderson and 34-year-old Michael Dougherty trapped in a second-floor room. Frassa quickly located a ladder and was able to help the two victims down to safety. A third resident was able to escape on his own.

Police say a pet dog died in the fire. The occupants of the home were treated for smoke inhalation and released from St. Anthony’s Hospital.

Several West Milford fire companies responded to the scene along with firefighters and EMTs from Upper Greenwood, Greenwood Lakes, Highland Lakes, Chilton and the West Milford Animal Control.
