NEW YORK - (AP) - Anthony Weiner says he and his wife need to "heal from the damage" that he caused by sending lewd photos hetook of himself to other women online and then lying about it. Andso, he's resigning from Congress.

The New York Democrat made the announcement at a raucous eventin a Brooklyn senior center this afternoon. The crowd includedhecklers and radio shock jocks, vying for attention.

Weiner did his best to ignore the clamor, repeating his apologyfor what he described as "personal mistakes" and the "embarrassment" he's caused to his constituents and his wife.

Huma Abedin was not present the announcement. She is pregnant with the couple's first child and had been traveling overseas for much of the past 10 days with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Weiner said he had hoped to remain in Congress, but that hadbecome impossible and it was now time to let his colleagues "getback to work" and his neighbors choose a new representative.
