RIDGEWOOD - Outdoor watering restrictions are in place for four towns after rising temperatures and lack of rainfall in recent weeks reduced water reserves to near-critical levels in northern New Jersey.

Town officials are urging residents of Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park and Wyckoff to comply with watering restrictions. According to those restrictions, homeowners in even-numbered houses can run their sprinklers on even days, and odd-numbered homes on odd days. Residents can use a hand-held hose on any day but Monday, when there's no watering allowed.

Homeowners who do not comply with the restrictions will face a $50 fine for the first offense, and will have to appear in court.

Fines go up for second and third offenses.
