HOBOKEN - Repair crews are working on a 12-inch water main break in Hoboken that caused a street to buckle, swallowing a small car.

Police say the water main break happened at 8th Street and Willow Avenue early this morning. The break caused flooding along the street and in the basements of nearby buildings.

Willow Avenue is closed at 11th Street, and 8th Street is closed at Park Avenue.

The city says residents on Willow Avenue between 8th and 9th streets are expected to be without water service until repairs are completed later this afternoon.

United Water says the water is safe to drink in the rest of the city, although it may be discolored. The city says anyone with pressure should boil their water before use.

A second water main break has occurred a few blocks away at 14th Street. The 30-inch main was struck by a contractor working in the area.
